Rape is another form of cancer that is making life in India sick, repulsive and revolting.
I was watching a debate on this with the teacher and students of LSR college in Delhi. All the participants seemed to say that they feel like commodities and the patriarchal Indian society is to be blamed. To me, it appeared that these educated teacher and students were living in a theoretical world with their own notions taught to them by the very patriarchal society they were blaming.
To me, there are distinct three different types of people who commit these heinous crimes.
1. The rich, urban pampered sons and son in laws of political, business leaders who believe and often are above laws.
Why they do it? I feel it is for the sake of gratification, display of naked power and disgust for those who dont have money or power equal to them. The very believe that they are above laws and lack of respect for their mothers and sisters are the faulted reasons for them to act these way.
2. The relatives who lust after in laws, other family members. These are seldom random act and the act that culminate is a result of long lasting desire.
Why they do it? Its pure lust and lack of judgment and self respect, lack of respect for their mothers and wives. Often these goes unreported.
3. The uneducated, deprived those in the fringes of societies. These type of people were responsible for the rape in Delhi in last few months. They don't have to loose anything. They work for people who have money, they see those having a family and quality of life which is beyond their reach and will always remain beyond their reach. They hate their lot, staying away from family, living a sad life, trying to earn little to just survive. They have a truly sad life from which only death can give them freedom.
Why they do it? They do it because they don't have a yesterday, today or tomorrow and often they do while intoxicated. They don't believe they have a future and they don't believe they have anything to loose. Their brains aren't developed enough to understand the havoc they cause to the lives of the people and their family they rape.
I can be judgemental, I can be erudite and can think of million things which should be done to address and prevent rape. Eventually it all boils down to the fact that if people are educated, have some quality of life and have something which they fear to loose then rape and any other crime would come down. If we believed in our government then I would have thought that steps would be taken to reach these goals but know who are our leaders and what keeps them busy, I feel sick that these wouldn't be done in any sustained meaningful way.
So what is the solution? The solution is to put fear of God in everyone living and roaming in India. state and Police should be seen as tough arm of law who consistently dish out justice. Hang anyone committing rape and widely publicise it. This menace will ebb. The animals who commit rape don't have any reason to live anyways.
Our police force lack teeth, motivation and force of numbers. I feel India should have a cess of 1-2% which will be used to streghten the police and army. These will go a long way to address the duel curse of rape and terrorism.
