Writing skills

What occupies my mind now a days is how to teach a boy to love writing and love writing well. Suddenly, it seems to be insurmountable job which I feel clueless how to achieve. My mind goes back to my yonger years when I didnt have much love for anything related to studies, leave alone writing. That changed when I grew up and though I dont have solid gramtical foundation, I feel I get by writing ok. That has happened since I seem to have develop a 'sense of what's write gramatically' by reading many many books written by many many different authors. Shrihaan doesnt seem to be my interested in reading at this stage either, Im not sure how many eight year old love reading and writing either. However, being a parent and it being something not to do with myself, I feel sooner he develops writing skill and love reading, better it would prepare him for a beautiful life.

The question remains how do I achieve that.

I have spoken to teachers and they say that he should read a lot, that would help him write with the right strcuture. But how do I make him love reading? There are few authors he love reading but he more interested in talking to me about his friends and computer games and what he wants as reward for achieve something (can be as innocuous as doing two Kumon worksheets!)

Reading at bed is something I too need to have discipline to make him do it.

I look back at my past and I remember to memorise things, I used to read and write. This greatly help it to commit things like mechanism etc to the memory and chances of mistakes also comes down.

I tried that with Shrihaann with bit modifications. I asked him to read something and just write about it. However, it became a challenge for me to find something that he would love to read and then write. Also, improving his style is another challenge.

Next we thought he should be writing about things he does in his daily activities. We would ask him to write about places we visit, games he plays and some simple topics.

We did whole of the summer vacation though not that regularly since we didnt want to deprive him the joy of playing and having fun during summer vacations. We find he has improved somewhat. There is more facts and varieties in his writing now. We are proud of his vocabulary. I infact cannt often beat him in word games but before we wouldnt find him using any of the beautiful words he knows. He would tell he doesnt use wow words since he was scared of making spelling mistakes. We encouraged him to use wow words even if the spelling would be wrong. Now sometimes we do find him using some good words.

He has wirtten a room was 'enormously small' and while I was checking he himself asked me is it was bit funny!

It seems to be wrong drawn process that requires lot of committment from us which sometimes we fail to live up to. Need more decipline.
