Holiday in Malaysia

We spent five hectic yest facinating days during 23-28 Oct, 2012 in three places in Malaysia.  This has been in our plan for sometimes and it is understandable that five days were too short to do justice to a country like Malaysia. But that is the best we could do and came back satisfied that the few places we couldnt go were not unique to Malaysia and we might go there again sometimes in future.

We reached KL at 10am from Bangkok and oour flight to Lankawai was at 2pm. We explore the airport area having the international and domestic terminal close by. We discovered Marry Brown, the Malyasia's answer to McDonald andwe loved the twist in food there. We loved it so much so, that we made this our place to snacks. Unfortunately, we realised McDonald didnt allow it in Lankawai!

Lankawi is famed and we didnt want to miss it. Its a love place with long white sand beach, very green, with lot of fantastic resorts to stay. We love the hustle bustle of a place, we love the light, the sound, the atmosphere of controlled chaos, hence we decided to stay in Pentai Cenang. The whole place has a languid, laidback, serene writen allover it. The raxi drivers were friendly and chatty. The mangroove day trip was worth it. We spent lot of time in the beach and the sea.

I came to a conclusion here though. This place was no different from Phuket or Koh Samet and hence I felt that all the beaches in a sea, in this case the Andaman sea will be same and it mightnt be worth it to travel far just to seea partuclar beach town. In our case, I felt that we could just go to Koh Samet, again and again if we wanted to have a beach holiday, at much less effort, more leasurely and at much lesser cost. I also know that it is in our nature to go far and wide in search of something unique, eventhough we know we will be disappointed. Otherwise, why have we booked out next holiday in Koh Samui for New Year allready?:)

We spent 2nights, 3 days in Lankawai and came to KL in the middle of the day on 25th Oct. We stayed in Hotel Melia, bang opposite to Times Square and we loved it there. We checked in and went to Butik Bintang for evening walk. The place was throbing with life, a typical commercial area with plenty of shops, street food, big malls and con artists galore. We could speak in our native Bengali since lot of the businesses were run by Bangladesies! The place also has a distint Arabic feel since seem KL is a favourite hunting ground for people from middle East and for obvioud reasons. KL is a very modern ciry, with fantastic roads, moored in religion yet it was not on your face, well developed and atleast safe on the surface. Everyone on the net warns to mugging and pick pocketing but fortunately we had a safe stay there. For us, it was unique to see muslims and Hindu's living in harmony keeping their own faith and rituals. There is lot to learns from Malaysia in this regard.

We had some of famed Malaysia food and didnt like it in particlar. The food seems to be very spicy with distinct pungency and we were thus bit disapointed in that regard.

We love to explore a city at our own space and so we research it well before going their so we know atleast what are the must see places. We decided to take the Hop-on, Hop-off bus next day and had a very busy, yet facinating day. We visited the Hindu temple, The China Town, the Central market, The Bird park, The Islamic Museum, the Petronas tower and few parks. We also saw the place where the handover to freedom was done.

We spent a day in Genting and it was the holiday weekend due to Hari Raya. It was massively crowded and had huge waiting period for any of the rides. It is not worth going there if one has seen Disney land. No one told us that and so sharing this view here.

We loved the Batu Cave. We also wonder what is the connection of monkeys to a religious place since allmost all Indian religious places seems to have them!

We didnt go the Cameron Highlands, the Tea estate. I have seen lot of Tea Estates in India and hope to take Dona and Shrihaan to one of those places. We didnt go to Marleca which captures the old lifestyle in Malaysia.
