Bangkok happenings!

Being barely nine month old in Bangkok, its hard to pretend that I would understand its society, the tensions, the undercorrents, the hopes and aspirations that has defined the harse reality of last several weeks in Bangkok. The Bangkok that we knew as holidaying paradise, the trainquil land of excesses is changed forever.
It all started with a air of vestivity and good natured gest. So much so, that I would walk around those rally site in search of suvenirs.
I did that too on 10th April and terrible things happened that night. The whole atoshphere and colour of the thing changed and it dawned on us how dangerous it could be there.
Staying in Langsuan road, we found roads at the both end (Rajaprasong and Lumpini Park) getting closed with heaps of tire and assorted flamable material.
We decided to try to move to another place and we got help in doing that.
I was in Manila on 14th night and was having dinner in North park when I called Dona and she said soe leader has been shot. I allmost ran down to New world hotel to go online and realised that more chaos was expected in Bangkok. I worried if it would be safe to come back to Bangkok, specially when I was to fly to Singapore on 16th again.
While coming back to Northgate from airport, saw huge black collumns of smoke little father away.
It was scary, it was mind numbing experience. Every living hours were spent on checking it out online and watching TV. Soon realised how media can let down people by the balan coverage by CNN. Media is suppossed to be honest and have huge responsibility towards the society but then who says that for prostitution, one has to walk the road! Switched to Aljazeerza. Discovered Thaivisa.com. The battered primeminister, who was becoming an example of comical inefficiency slowly showed decisiveness and managed to bring back a semblance of normality. The subsequent occurances again proved that laws and rules have to be implemented shiftly, decisively and imparitally. If not, Bangkok will happen.
It appears to me that people of Thailand are far better off than in many Asian countries and rich-poor devide is not as mind numbing as in many of ther Asian countries. The land is fertile, good infrastucture has resulted in a society where at least the bare basics are guarateed. Again, everyday life is relatively free from the interferance from government, hence democracy is not all that bad like in many countries. One thing that is clear is that to run this kind of things for close to two months require lot of money and money it had. The shear audacity, the shear scope of the things that happen indicated powerful men behind it with intelligent, schemeing minds which could be better applied for common good.
